Project Overview

Engaged as Sub-Agent and Lead Engineer by SIAN for a highly complex structural package on the HS2 project. Tasked with the overarching technical and logistical management of 10 concurrent major structures (6 overbridges and 4 viaducts) spanning a 10-mile section. Bridged the gap between the Client, design teams, and site execution, ensuring that reinforced concrete elements were implemented precisely to detailed design specifications. Effectively balanced high-level programme management with rigorous, on-the-ground technical inspections to ensure a "Right First Time" delivery.

Execution & Key Deliverables

  • Co-managed the structural engineering execution for a portfolio of 10 major infrastructure assets, coordinating workflows across multiple concurrent workfronts.
  • Conducted thorough structural inspections and implemented rigorous quality control procedures for complex reinforced concrete structures and foundations.
  • Leveraged BIM workflows and 3D AutoCAD models for precise design coordination, successfully verifying physical construction against digital twins.
  • Executed meticulous as-built verification and tolerance checks, consistently maintaining structural implementation within stringent HS2 design specifications.

Technical Challenges & Solutions

  • Directed the precise spatial positioning and levelling of complex bridge abutment bearings, ensuring accurate structural load transfer and adherence to stringent millimeter-perfect HS2 execution tolerances.
  • Managed and executed highly constrained lifting operations, coordinating high-capacity cranes, bespoke lifting beams, and temporary works setups to safely install heavy precast concrete parapets and structural elements.
  • Resolved critical on-site constructability issues, specifically identifying and mitigating physical clashes between dense RC reinforcement detailing, cast-in items, and temporary formwork prior to concrete pours.
  • Identified unbuildable rebar detailing and dimensional discrepancies in the issued construction drawings, raising targeted Requests for Information (RFIs) to secure prompt, practical resolutions from the design team.

Programme & Management

  • Co-developed comprehensive site layouts, logistical plans, and detailed construction sequencing for 10 concurrent structural sites.
  • Aided in creating, tracking, and maintaining 6-week lookahead planning documents, actively identifying the critical path across the 10-mile section.
  • Optimised plant, material, and personnel resource allocation across multiple concurrent structures to prevent logistical bottlenecks and mitigate programme delays.
  • Directed site engineering teams and maintained strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental protocols across a wide-spanning, multi-disciplinary infrastructure environment.
